There is a 1630 record of a Jean Brua of Kirrberg (very near Gorli ngen), believed to be a widower then and almost certainly the son of Gl ad, as a tenant operator of a grist mill owned by the hospital of Saver ne about 16 miles to the east. This is the earliest reference to a Brua a s a miller, an occupation which the family pursued for at least 250 yea rs, both in the old world and the new. Another record says that Jean Br ua from Kirrberg fought in the Thirty Years War during 1641. In the sam e year, according to records of the Evangelical Church, "Jean Brua of W olfskirchen" (five miles north of Kirrberg) married Margret Meyel (or M eier), a widow from Hirschland, four miles away. This is the earliest m ention of Hirschland (meaning Deerland in German) in connection with th e Brua family, and from then on it became the center of the Brua clan. E ven today there are several dozen families of Bruas living within ten m iles of it. Farms in the area are small and most of the owners live in t he villages, often keeping a few cattle and some poultry adjacent to th eir houses. It probably wasn't much different 250 years ago.
